Medieval Lion Fabric
A historically inspired fabric based on an original 10th–11th-century textile fragment.
The repeating checkerboard pattern features standing lions shown in profile. Golden lions appear against dark brown squares framed by dotted borders, alternating with simpler reddish-brown lions on a light ground.
The original textile was produced using a combination of printing and hand-painted details on a plain-weave fabric. Small variations between the animals give the pattern its distinctive handmade character.
This striking medieval design is suitable for historical garments, costumes, accessories, cushions, interiors and museum-inspired creative projects.
Custom colours and scale
The colours and size of the lions can be adjusted upon request. Please contact me before ordering if you would like the design adapted to your project.
Dedicated to Zoë Porphyrogenita
This fabric has been named 1000 Zoë Porphyrogenita after the Byzantine empress Zoë Porphyrogenita (c. 978–1050). Born into the Macedonian imperial dynasty, she became one of the most prominent women of the Byzantine court and ruled as empress in Constantinople during the 11th century.
