Small Floral Cotton Fabric – Early 19th Century Regency Print

Product Description

This historical floral fabric is inspired by an early 19th-century cotton print featuring delicate yellow blossoms and fresh green foliage scattered across a deep navy blue background. Small-scale floral designs like this became increasingly popular during the Regency period, offering an elegant alternative to larger botanical prints while remaining versatile for both fashionable clothing and everyday wear.

The compact repeat makes this design especially suitable for garments where proportion is important, including short jackets, waistcoats, children's clothing, and regional dress. It works beautifully for Regency Spencer jackets and is also well suited for the traditional Finnish Röijy — a short fitted jacket typically featuring pleated skirts at the back that forms part of several Finnish folk costumes.

Printed on high-quality fabric, this design combines historical character with practical usability for historical costume makers, museums, living history events, reenactment, folk costume projects, and period-inspired sewing.

Well suited for

  • Regency Spencer jackets (c. 1795–1820)
  • Traditional Finnish Röijy short jackets for folk costume projects
  • Historical men's printed waistcoats
  • Regency accessories including bags, reticules and bonnets
  • Children's historical clothing
  • Living history, museum reproductions and historical reenactment

Design & Historical Context

Small floral cotton prints became a characteristic feature of fashionable dress during the late Georgian and Regency periods. Their restrained scale allowed garments to retain elegant proportions while adding colour and visual texture. Similar prints appeared throughout Northern Europe and were suitable for both everyday clothing and more refined informal dress.

This type of floral pattern is particularly appropriate for traditional Finnish Röijy, the distinctive short jacket worn with several Finnish folk costumes. Characterised by its fitted bodice and pleated skirts at the back, the Röijy often benefited from finely scaled printed cottons that complemented its tailored silhouette.

1826 Tuwa Bergkulla Although this young woman is called Tuwa Bergkulla in this illustration, she could just as easily have been named Mina. Inspired by the traditions of the Bergkulla family and the coastal villages of Ostrobothnia in western Finland, she represents the many women who wore practical yet beautifully tailored short jackets, known as Röijy, during the early nineteenth century. Her clothing reflects the regional style that later became preserved in Finnish folk costume traditions, where finely printed cotton fabrics were valued for both everyday wear and festive occasions.
