1820s Floral Stripe Cotton Print – Regency Transitional Day Dress Fabric

Product Description

This elegant early 19th-century cotton print is inspired by transitional Regency and early Romantic fashion dating from the late 1820s into the early 1830s. The design combines delicate vertical floral vines with softly structured dotted lattice panels arranged across a pale ivory ground.

Trailing stems, small blossoms, berries, and fresh green leaves create a graceful striped rhythm typical of fashionable printed cottons from the period. The palette of warm crimson red, soft pink, olive green, and subtle black detailing gives the fabric a refined but lively appearance.

The narrow floral stripe arrangement visually elongates the silhouette, making the design especially suitable for gathered skirts, Regency back-closing gowns, lightweight cotton dresses, and elegant Spencer jackets. The small-scale repeat drapes beautifully across pleats, gathers, and curved bodice seams.

Light, feminine, and quietly sophisticated — a charming cotton print inspired by the refined everyday dress fabrics of the late Regency and early Romantic era.

Perfect for:

  • Regency Back-Closing Gowns (c.1815–1825)
  • 1820s day dresses
  • Gigot sleeve gowns and bodices
  • Spencer jackets
  • Gathered skirts and wrappers
  • Historical aprons and fichus
  • Historical reproduction sewing projects
  • Lightweight cotton garments

Design & Historical Context

This print reflects the transitional fashion period when the elegant high-waisted Regency silhouette gradually evolved toward the fuller Romantic styles of the 1830s. Printed cottons of this type became increasingly refined through advances in roller printing technology during the 1820s.

The balanced combination of floral vines and geometric dotted structure creates a textile that feels both orderly and romantic — highly characteristic of fashionable everyday cotton dress fabrics from the late Regency period.

Caroline Maria Applebee, born in 1786, was an English artist, mostly in watercolour.

Applebee's work features a wide variety of plants known in the 19th century, especially rare and exotic ones.
Applebee’s work was almost unknown until the invention of mass colour printing in the second half of the 20th century and is now used mostly to illustrate diaries and books about plants.
