Seaside Dress Fabric – Striped Cotton for Victorian Summer Dress, c. 1878

Product Description

This cheerful striped cotton is inspired by seaside fashions of the late 1870s, when bold lines and playful contrasts became a hallmark of summer attire. The soft cream ground combined with blue and rose-red stripes recalls dresses worn for promenade and leisure along the coast—elegant, practical, and distinctly Victorian.

The design reflects the lighter side of bustle-era fashion, where comfort and movement became increasingly important. The clear stripe rhythm reads beautifully across full dress panels and works equally well for garments and select interior applications.

This fabric is especially well suited for late 19th-century day dresses and summer gowns, but also adapts beautifully to accessories and light decorative projects.

Ideal for:

  • Bustle-era summer dresses and seaside gowns
  • Parasols, skirts, and bodices
  • Victorian-inspired leisurewear
  • Light interiors with a historic coastal feel

Emmeline Pankhurst as a young woman, circa 1870

Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928) was a British political activist and a key leader of the suffragette movement. She founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 and became known for her uncompromising fight for women’s voting rights. Her efforts contributed directly to women gaining partial suffrage in Britain in 1918 and full voting equality in 1928.
