1880s Summer Walking Dress Fabric

Product Description

This design is adapted from an 1880s French walking dress preserved in The Met Museum. The original textile features blue-toned motifs, here reinterpreted into a lighter palette suited for summer garments and warm-season dressmaking.

The structured repeat creates a clean and balanced surface, making it ideal for precise garment construction. The colourway allows the fabric to function both as a complement and as a standalone element in refined historical designs.

Well suited for

Ideal for 1880s walking dresses, bodices, lightweight overskirts, and coordinated accessories. Particularly suitable for projects requiring clarity in structure and surface balance. Also well suited for blouses, skirts, and structured summer garments.

Design & Historical Context

In the 1880s, French walking dresses often combined decorative and solid textiles to achieve contrast and definition. This approach enhanced both silhouette and construction, allowing garments to maintain visual clarity while supporting complex shapes and layered compositions.

Frederikke Federspiel with client 1910

Frederikke Jakobine Federspiel (1839–1913) was Denmark’s first professional female photographer, running her own studio in Aalborg and working with both local society and royal clients.

Her work reflects a period of technical development and cultural refinement, paralleling the structured elegance seen in late 19th-century dress and textile design.
