18th Century Blue Floral Textile

Product Description

This design is inspired by an original late 18th-century French floral textile fragment, here presented on a rich blue ground. The floral arrangement of roses, carnations and trailing blossoms creates a striking yet balanced decorative rhythm typical of fashionable European cotton textiles during the late 1700s.

The deeper blue background gives the historical floral composition a more dramatic and masculine expression, especially suitable for garments such as banyans and waistcoats. The contrast between the floral motifs and darker ground reflects the sophisticated colour aesthetics appreciated in refined 18th-century textile design.

Well suited for

Well suited for banyans, waistcoats, jackets, men’s dressing gowns, historical loungewear, theatre costume, museum interpretation, reenactment garments and historically inspired sewing projects. The elegant floral structure also works beautifully for decorative linings and smaller furnishing details.

Design & Historical Context

The original textile inspiration comes from late 18th-century French block printed cottons produced on plain weave foundations with multiple printed colour layers and hand-painted details. Floral textiles with darker grounds became increasingly fashionable for elegant informal garments, including banyans and waistcoats worn within aristocratic and intellectual circles throughout Europe.
