This reconstructed 1798 floral fabric design is suitable for Georgian and early Regency clothing. Design & Historical Context
The pattern was reconstructed from a textile sample in Barbara Johnson’s Album of Fashions and Fabrics. Compiled in England between 1746 and 1823, the album preserves fabric samples, fashion plates and handwritten notes documenting changing textile and clothing fashions.
Lady Sophia Cecil, the eldest child and only daughter of Henry, 10th Earl of Exeter, and Sarah Hoggins, lived at Burghley House near Stamford. A talented artist, she documented many of the house’s rooms, collections and exterior façades between 1816 and 1822. Her drawings provide a valuable record of Burghley in the early 19th century. This reconstructed 1798 textile design has been named in her honour.
