1820s Silk Satin Stripe Print – Regency Feather Motif

This striking silk satin print features alternating vertical stripes in deep aubergine purple and warm tobacco brown, decorated with stylised feather motifs and small geometric medallions. The elongated stripe arrangement creates a strong vertical rhythm typical of elegant transitional fashions from the late Regency and early Romantic period.

The palette of rich plum, golden ochre, black, cream, and muted bronze gives the textile a dramatic yet refined appearance. The repeating feather-like motifs add movement and lightness while the structured stripes maintain balance and sophistication.

Printed on silk satin with a luminous surface ideal for historically inspired garments, theatrical costume work, and statement Regency fashion projects. The vertical composition works beautifully for flowing skirts, fitted bodices, and elegant draped silhouettes.

This design is sold as a 5 metre Silk Satin length.

Design & Historical Context

Striped silks with stylised ornamental motifs became increasingly fashionable during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Designs like this combined geometric order with exotic decorative inspiration, creating textiles that appeared both structured and expressive.

The elongated stripe effect visually enhances the body’s proportions while the rich silk satin surface reflects light beautifully — highly suitable for the elegant draped silhouettes associated with Regency and transitional Romantic fashion.

Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865) was one of the most influential Swedish-language writers of the 19th century and a pioneering figure in the Nordic women’s rights movement. She was born in Finland, which at the time was part of the Kingdom of Sweden, and later became internationally recognised for introducing the realist novel to Sweden.

Here are some of the most important aspects of her life and legacy:

Authorship:
She achieved major success during the 1830s with Sketches of Everyday Life (Teckningar utur hvardagslifvet), and her works were translated into several languages. Her most famous novel, Hertha (1856), became a landmark feminist work that strongly contributed to legal reforms granting unmarried women legal majority in Sweden.

Women’s Rights Advocacy:
Bremer campaigned passionately for women’s access to education, economic independence, and legal rights. Her ideas later inspired the founding of the Fredrika Bremer Association (Fredrika-Bremer-Förbundet), Sweden’s oldest women’s rights organisation.

Public Intellectual and Social Reformer:
She was an internationally respected social critic and early advocate for peace, social justice, and human rights.

Today, Fredrika Bremer is remembered as one of the most important literary and social reform figures in Nordic history.
