Maria Mitchell, born in 1818 in Nantucket, Massachusetts, was the first female professional astronomer in the United States.
Mitchell was also the first astronomer to discover a comet using a telescope, in 1847.
The comet came to be called Miss Mitchell's comet, but now has the designation C / 1847 T1. She later received a gold medal for her discovery, by the Danish king, Frederick VI of Denmark.
