Verla Rock Painting Fabric
A historically inspired fabric based on the prehistoric Verla rock painting in Finland, estimated to date from approximately 4800–3500 BC.
The original painting was created with red ochre on a smooth granite cliff rising directly from the water at Verla. The six-metre-wide scene contains at least eight elk moving in the same direction, together with human figures and several symbolic markings.
Some of the human figures appear to have horns and have therefore been interpreted as possible shamans. A zigzag figure between a human and an elk may represent a snake or a spiritual helper. The precise meaning of the images remains unknown, but they may have been connected with hunting rituals, prosperity or the elk as a mythical ancestor.
This ancient Nordic design is suitable for garments, accessories, interiors and creative projects inspired by prehistoric art and Finnish cultural heritage.
