English Rococo Floral Fabric

Product Description

Inspired by an original English embroidered silk gown dating from c. 1765–1770, this elegant floral design captures the graceful character of late Rococo fashion. Delicate meandering floral sprigs, reminiscent of hand embroidery in satin stitch, French knots and stem stitch, create a refined and timeless appearance that remained fashionable well into the late eighteenth century.

The original gown was later altered during the 1770s, reflecting how fine garments were often updated to follow changing fashions rather than replaced. This enduring floral style makes the design suitable for a wide range of historical sewing projects from the 1760s through the early 1780s.

Printed on your chosen fabric, this design recreates the soft elegance of eighteenth-century embroidered silks while offering the practicality of modern textile printing.

Well suited for

  • Robe à l'Anglaise gowns
  • English jackets
  • Caracos
  • Historical accessories
  • Cushions and interior decoration
  • Museum reproduction projects
  • Living history and historical reenactment

Design & Historical Context

The original gown was made from white silk satin embroidered with colourful floral sprigs, demonstrating the refined craftsmanship of eighteenth-century English embroidery. During the 1770s, it was carefully remodelled to reflect changing fashions, illustrating the historical practice of altering valuable garments rather than discarding them. This design celebrates the enduring elegance of English Rococo textiles and the decorative floral patterns that remained admired throughout the late Georgian period.

Maria Catharina Armfelt (1728–1803), born Maria Catharina Wennerstedt, was a Finnish noblewoman and mistress of Juva Manor in Tarvasjoki. As the wife of Baron Magnus Wilhelm Armfelt and mother of the influential statesman Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, she belonged to one of the most prominent noble families in 18th-century Finland. Her household reflected the elegance of the Rococo era, making her an inspiring historical reference for eighteenth-century textiles, fashion, and interior design.
