1780s Floral Silk for Robe à la Polonaise & Anglaise Gowns
This elegant late 18th-century floral textile is inspired by original Robe à la Polonaise silk designs from the 1780s. The flowing garlands and delicate blossoms create a balanced rhythm across the surface, ideal for historically informed garments as well as refined decorative use.
The colour palette has been carefully adjusted into a more harmonious “modern coloured” interpretation, reducing harsher tones while preserving the character of the original composition. The result is a fabric that reads authentically historical, yet visually soft and wearable.
Well suited for
Perfect for Robe à la Polonaise, Robe à l’Anglaise, petticoats, and other 18th-century garments. Also suitable for historical interiors such as cushions, panels, or light upholstery where a refined floral expression is desired.
Design & Historical Context
The design is based on documented silk garments from circa 1780, preserved in multiple museum collections. Originals were often executed in silk taffeta with hand-painted floral motifs. This version translates that aesthetic into a production-friendly format while maintaining the visual language of the period.
Reference Person
This fabric is dedicated to Dorothea Jordan (1761–1816), a renowned comic actress of Irish and Welsh origin. She became one of the most celebrated performers of her time and later the companion of the future King William IV, with whom she had ten children. Her life reflects the cultural and social dynamics of the late 18th century.
