1760 Rococo Floral Chintz

Product Description

A reconstructed 18th century floral textile design inspired by an original block-printed cotton preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The original fabric dates from the 1760s and was later used in an elaborate sack gown and matching petticoat, probably assembled or remodelled during the late 1770s.

The design combines scrolling botanical branches, flowers and delicate foliage in rich blue, red and maroon tones against a warm light ground. Its irregular floral movement and generous spacing reflect the character of European printed cottons influenced by fashionable Indian chintzes during the second half of the 18th century.

Design & Historical Context

The cotton itself is dated to 1760–1769, while the sack and petticoat were probably made or substantially remodelled around 1775–1780. The ensemble incorporates three different printed cotton patterns, demonstrating both creative reuse and the value placed on fashionable printed fabrics.

The gown combines printed cotton with linen and silk linings and elaborate ruched decoration edged with pale yellow silk ribbon. Its construction includes the characteristic pleated back of the sack gown, a split stomacher, elbow-length sleeves and a decorated matching petticoat. Such garments illustrate the growing importance of colourful printed cottons within fashionable European dress during the later 18th century.
