1830s Pink Botanical Cotton Print

This delicate pink floral cotton print originates from an early 19th-century Scrapbook of Textile Swatches dating to the early 1830s. The design features softly shaded coral-like floral motifs in rose, raspberry, and pale pink tones arranged across a light ground with tiny dotted blossoms and trailing decorative details.

The overall effect is light, feminine, and highly characteristic of the romantic textile aesthetics emerging during the transition from the late Regency period into the early Victorian era. The softly textured surface and watercolor-like shading recall refined printed cottons and fashionable calicoes used during the 1830s–1850s.

Perfect for:

  • Early Victorian dresses
  • Pelerines, aprons, wrappers, collars, and fichus
  • Children’s clothing and historical accessories
  • Cottage interiors, cushions, and quilting projects
  • Doll clothing and romantic sewing projects

Portrait of Tono Maria, an Aimoré woman from Brazil displayed in London during the early 19th century

Tono Maria was an Aimoré woman from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil who became known in London during the early 19th century. Her portrait reflects both the fascination and exploitation connected to public exhibition culture during the period. The soft pink tones and ornamental qualities of this textile visually resonate with the romantic and exoticised aesthetics that circulated widely in European decorative arts and fashion during the early Victorian era.
