Ellen Key, Born in 1849, was a world-renowned author, educator, peace activist, feminist and visionary. She grew up on the Sundsholm manor outside Västervik in a politically engaged family, but moved to Stockholm as a 30-year-old when the estate went bankrupt, and supported herself as a teacher at Anna Whitlock's school.

She became an opinion leader early on, for example in matters of freedom of expression and press, women's rights, education issues and social issues. During the 1890s, she was in the middle of the national debate and was both praised and criticized for her views.

In 1900, she broke through internationally with her most famous book, The Children's Century, which was soon translated into 13 languages.
