1780s Striped Textile for Waistcoat & Petticoat
Product Description
This design is inspired by an 18th-century sewing pocket (“syficka”), where small fabric remnants were carefully arranged and preserved. The striped composition with small decorative motifs reflects how textiles were reused in a practical yet aesthetically thoughtful way.
The pattern combines structure and rhythm, making it especially suitable for garments where direction and repetition enhance the final result.
Well suited for
Waistcoats, petticoats, 18th-century garments, and historical sewing projects where a structured striped textile is desired. Particularly well suited for lighter cotton linen fabrics, where the pattern gains clarity and definition.
Design & Historical Context
The inspiration comes from a late 18th-century sewing pocket, dated around 1780–1800, illustrating how even the smallest textile pieces were used with intention. Such objects offer insight into everyday textile practices and the value of materials during the period.
The design is named after Harriott Pinckney Horry, whose 18th-century household writings provide a glimpse into daily life, resourcefulness, and domestic culture of her time.
