Custom historical fabric design for heritage environments
Custom historical fabric design for Skansen Stockholm, developed for use in heritage environments and worn in daily historical interpretation.
I have recreated multiple custom textile designs on commission for Skansen, in collaboration with Anna Lindgren. These fabrics have been used for 1950s-style dresses worn by guides within the open-air museum environment, where historical accuracy and visual coherence are essential.
Some of these garments have also been used in staged performances, demonstrating how historically informed textile design can function both in everyday interpretation and on stage.
Textile Design for Living History Environments
Designing fabrics for Skansen requires a balance between historical reference, durability, and usability. The textiles must work in an active environment where garments are worn daily, while still maintaining the visual language of the period they represent.
These examples show how documented textile patterns can be adapted into functional fabrics for real use within a historical setting.
About Skansen Stockholm
Skansen is one of the world’s oldest open-air museums, located on Djurgården in Stockholm. Founded in 1891, it was created to preserve and present Swedish cultural history before industrialisation.
The site includes over 150 historical buildings, reconstructed environments, and costumed interpreters who bring different periods of Swedish life to life. It is a unique place where history is not only displayed but actively lived.
If you come across garments made from my fabrics during your visit, feel free to take a photo and share it — it is always appreciated to see the textiles in their final context.
歴史的な環境の中で実際に使われるテキスタイルとして、機能性と時代性の両方を大切にしています。
